Academic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Chemistry – The University of Melbourne

Experience:

Debbie has more than 18 years of extensive experience specialising in the drafting and prosecution of both local and overseas patent applications. She has also been responsible for patent oppositions and other litigation matters, and advised clients on matters of patentability, validity and infringement.

Debbie has particular expertise in the pharmaceutical, biochemistry and metallurgy fields, as well as all aspects of chemistry including polymer processing, electrochemistry and organic physical and inorganic chemistry. Debbie has a large local client practice to which she provides advice on patent strategy and due diligence. She also handles opposition matters for overseas clients and regularly provides patent infringement opinions. Debbie’s clients range from leading Australian research organisations such as CSIRO, universities and start-up pharmaceutical, medical device and chemical companies to large multinational corporations. She often visits her overseas pharmaceutical clients giving presentations to their in-house attorneys on developments in Australian patent law. As many of her pharmaceutical clients are biotechnology companies, she is capable of bridging the gap between chemistry and biotechnology. Being responsible for a team, Debbie also spends her time mentoring and training younger attorneys.
