| A design registration provides protection for the appearance of either a two or three dimensional article. Design registration can be powerful where the article must have that appearance (e.g. a spare part) or where the appearance has high aesthetic appeal. However, a design registration does not provide protection for the function of an article and, if functional protection is required, this can only be achieved using the patent process.
